Memento Mori
"Memento Mori" is a Latin expression translating to "remember you must die". It comes from the Stoic principle of confronting one's mortality and the fleeting nature of life. I explore this theme by using a palette dominated by somber black, white, and grey. Fractured lines and blurred edges are used to evoke the sensation of "what once was" now is faded into an obscure artifact. My goal is to capture an ethereal haunting, and calming ambiance.
I use acrylic and mixed-media including ink, charcoal, pastel, and spray-paint in order to work quickly. These require several distressed layers in order to create the visual depth and ghostly forms that I prefer.
I invite viewers contemplate remnants of what once thrived and the built-in impermanence of everything. To honor the delicate balance between existence and oblivion, and to imbue the present moment with meaning. In embracing the essence of "Memento Mori," these pieces serve as a celebration of life's profound beauty.
Heavy Jazz
The "Heavy Jazz" series are inspired by my deep love of music and the profound effect it has by connecting so many people. The jazz scene of New Orleans, the live music I'd hear when I lived in Austin TX, and the music I'd listen to when I was younger, all inspired to me. My envy of musicians brought me to create this series. They're the closest thing I do that feels like "rocking-out", my way of translating sound into a picture. A vibe. Chaos and order.
Intricate layers, mirroring rhythm, beats, and melodies invite viewers to immerse themselves in a kaleidoscope derived from auditory experiences. They're meant to represent the essence of energy and interconnectedness of everything through vibration at a sub-atomic level. Think "Quantum Entanglement"
I intentionally use sketchy lines to connect the multi-layered and ambiguous figures. What seems like random shapes should begin to appear to have an organized pattern within it. Acrylic, ink, charcoal, and pastels are used to add further depth. Minute details appear upon close inspection.
Muse
My Muse series embodies the essence of the elegant beauty that I see when I look at the human form. My subjects are usually feminine, and deliberately positioned in states of vulnerability or unwavering confidence. These works celebrate the natural beauty of femininity, and I make no apologies.
I use harmonious color palettes to convey vibrant energy, and attempt to emphasize both beauty and strength by combining soft organic contours with bold geometric shapes. I want these pieces to hold a certain power over the viewer.
