Memento Mori
"Memento mori," a Latin expression translating to "remember you must die," encapsulates the Stoic principle of confronting mortality in order to appreciate life's transient nature. I explore themes of the fleeting essence of existence. Using a palette dominated by somber blacks and greys, I employ fractured lines and enigmatic layers to evoke the sensation of what once was but now fades into obscurity, creating an ethereal ambiance.
Viewers are invited to contemplate the intangible remnants of what once thrived, and the impermanence of worldly pursuits. I ask observers to acknowledge the delicate balance between life and oblivion, urging them to seize the present moment and imbue it with meaning. In embracing the essence of "memento mori," these pieces serve as both a testament to life's brevity and a celebration of its profound beauty.
Heavy Jazz
The "Heavy Jazz" series encapsulates my profound connection with music that electrifies me. Inspired the vibrant jazz scene of New Orleans and the live music I'd hear when I lived in Austin TX. My visits to these musical havens ingrained a deep appreciation for unique sounds, whether echoing through bustling streets or resonating within packed venues. A rich tapestry of auditory experiences served as the catalyst for my artistic exploration, offering a visual representation of the music's essence.
I describe these works as visual translations of sound, intricately layering my compositions, delving deeper into abstraction, mirroring the complex rhythms and melodies. Through this process, I seek to capture arrhythmic beauty and invite viewers to immerse themselves in a kaleidoscope of patterns.
Muse
My Muse series embodies the essence of inspiration for creative artists, personifying a force that ignites their imaginative spark. In the Muse series, homage is paid to the elegant simplicity of the human form. My subjects are usually feminine, and deliberately positioned in states of vulnerability or unwavering confidence. Emphasizing the subtle nuances of jawlines, shoulders, necklines, and cheek bones, I use harmonious color palettes in an attempt to convey a vibrant energy. These works are a celebration of natural feminine beauty, and I make no apologies.
